Fulmer Calls The Shots

Submitted by Jim Wogan on January 12, 2006 - 8:20pm

Vol head coach Phillip Fulmer and the UT Football machine did an excellent job Wednesday showing all is fine on the football front.

It was just too obvious.

With the departure of three assistant coaches after a 5 win season-- and with the defection of offensive lineman Rob Smith (first reported by WATE last week)-- Fulmer pulled-out all the stops to show he's in charge and everything is healthy inside Vol Nation.

One hour before the 10-1 UT basketball team was to take the court in a critical home game against Georgia, Fulmer took the stage at a media gathering, and was backed by five players-- who all announced they intend to stay at UT and play their senior seasons for The Big Orange.

The players are key. They will contribute. But it was hardly a Peyton Manning moment.

Only one of the players we spoke with was projected to be a high NFL draft pick. Justin Harrell-- 2nd round. The others were mid-level picks, at best.

Clearly, the gathering was orchestrated to give UT's football program some positive press at a time the the Vols need it most. And it worked. Tapes rolled. Cameras flashed. Fulmer smiled (we haven't seen that in a while).

I know the Vol Football team

I know the Vol Football team had a losing season- but give them a break! I am a huge fan and will support them even though the had a losing season- I know that they will be back and we will see our Vols shine in that spotlight again. It may be obvious that they were trying to put on a good front- but what do you want them to do- get up there and cry and go on about how bad our season was??? No - you want to see them giving the players staying their praise and giving the fans hope for next year. It may not have been a Peton Manning moment for you - but it was for those players. One may need to remember that.
Our Vols need our support now to get back on track and I say we need to all get behind them and give it to them.

The VOL's are never going to

The VOL's are never going to be better than an average team as long as Fulmer is in charge. There is a total lack of discipline on and off the field. One thing that stands out the most for me is a few years back when one of the players was being investigated for sexual assualt. Fulmer went and talked the other person involved. When did he become a detective? I have no respect for Fulmer and UT needs a good football coach.
