Million Dollar Lady

Pat Summitt's jumbo-sized contract is in-line with what's taking place in college athletics. Are coaches really worth $1 million a season? Maybe, maybe not. But Summitt's value goes beyond wins and losses. Sure, the six national titles and 900 career wins are great athletic accomplishments. But Summitt's stature as a role model-- and not just for women-- is why she's being paid a handsome fee. She graduates players, demands good citizenship, and instills responsibility and accountability from those who work and play for her.
Those aren't just the qualities of a good coach. Those are qualities of a good leader and person. With her male counterparts making in excess of $1 million a season-- it was high time Summitt was rewarded too.

It's about results, and neither has produced in the last few years. Where does this madness end. The University cried bloody murder when they had to buyout Buzz Peterson's contract, and yet now they can find money for raises under rocks it appears. Somethings fishy.

How can anyone argue with the success Pat Summitt, or Phil Fulmer have had down through the years.

WIth all due respect to Pat Summitt, the role model monicker is somewhat overworked in her case. A casual observer gets the impression she is a hard taskmaster..too hard at times and is going through a period where TN is no longer the dominant women's basketball team. Much like the men's football team they appear to be going on a slide and with people transferring and assistant coaches leaving for their own gigs elsewhere, I wonder if she can regain the recruiting edge and get the team back up where it use to be. The money is nice, but if the women's team becomes an also ran, surpassed not only by UCONN but by the likes of Maryland I wonder if the fans will continue to hold her in such high esteem.
