The Quarterback Issue

Without being allowed to watch practice, the media is having a hard time picking-up any kind of vibe on Phillip Fulmer's quarterback decision. Because sports REALLY isn't that different than politics, here's what I think the coach will do. Keep in mind, I am not a coach, and I certainly don't get paid like one.

Start Stephens.

Unless he was absolutely clueless in practice this week, it's the smart thing to do.

Stephens has exuded some can-do confidence in his media interviews this week. His only pass completion (out of two attempts) was a crucual back-to-the-goal line situation. He has virtually NO track record, but as offensive coordinator Dave Clawson said this week, "we need to shake things up."

Fulmer didn't go thru all this for nothing.

Here's where it gets interesting. Practice is only part of the equation. If both quarterbacks show moderate success against NIU, which is likely, who is in charge next week against Georgia?

Ah, the next great quarterback controversy!  Fulmer has vowed NEVER have one again. But after a 1-3 start, it wouldn't be such a bad thing after all, would it?
