Vols Off, Arizona Wins!

The last time I saw a football game at Arizona Stadium was 1980.  Twenty-eight years later, with the Vols off, my wife suggested we return to Tucson to see a game.  That shows you what kind of sports fan she is, and how lucky I am.

Not much has changed in nearly three decades. The stadium is basically the same, the campus is still beautiful, and the sunsets remain vivid. It was hot today, 102 degrees. By kickoff, it had cooled to around 90.  No big deal for folks here.

Truth be told, we've visited Tucson a few times since I graduated. But this was our first sports event since the days of gaining entry with my student ID.

The Wildcats beat Toledo 41-16.  So far, so good. Arizona is 2-0, but they open PAC-10 play in two weeks, and Southern Cal comes to town in late October.  As a fan, I am hoping for the best.

While at the U of A, we ran into some Alabama fans tailgating outside Arizona Stadium. The guy who parked our car (close to our old Tucson apartment on 9th/Vine) was a Gator fan.  I covered Tennessee football at UCLA in 1994, at Cal last year, and at UCLA again this year.  There's no doubt the SEC and PAC-10 are the two best conferences in the nation and I feel very blessed that both are a big part of my life.
