My Lunch Deal-- and Other Things

Submitted by Jim Wogan on June 5, 2009 - 9:33am

I said in in a twitter.com message last night BEFORE game one-- the Lakers could win in five. They had that look in their eyes during player introductions.  Looks like I could be right.

ESPN does a feature on Lane Kiffin on Outside the Lines Sunday morning at 9am.  Not worth skipping church over, but worth dvd'ing.

-----

Funny lunch experience this week:  Sign at drive-thru said "Buy one small sandwich, get one free".  Living a responsible, cost-conscious lifestyle, I thought-- sounds good to me.

So, I ordered the same kind of LARGE sandwich and looked forward to my bonus small one.

Drive-thru window employee said "No".

The deal was buy one SMALL sandwich, and get one free.

Thinking she misunderstood, I replied, "I know, so I'll by one LARGE and take the free small one."

She said, "It doesn't work that way."

I said, "Get the manager."

When he arrived, and asked what the problem was, I said I understood the "buy one small, get another free" deal.  But I told him I'd be willing to buy one LARGE sandwich-- pay him more money-- to get the free small sandwich too.

He said, "It doesn't work that way."

UGH!

My amusement with the situation had evaporated. I was hungry. I needed to get to work.  I said, "Fine, I'll buy a SMALL sandwich to get the free one, but you're losing money."

The manager left, and with the drive-thru employee happy to accept my $2.67, I asked if she understood my point.

She did, she explained. But added, "The button (on the register) doesn't work that way."

UGH again!

Among other things (installing pools, radio announcing, janitor) I worked fast food in college. I can count change forward and back. The extra penny thing doesn't throw me.

But we're living in a world where it's all figured out by the push of a button.  And I'm not sure that's always good.
