Crime- Kiffin's First Test

Submitted by Jim Wogan on November 12, 2009 - 9:01am

My first thought when I was told three UT football players had allegedly committed armed robbery outside a Pilot Convenience Center was-- are these guys nuts? Don't they know who paid for most of UT's football facilities?

The allegations are serious and the location is ironic. Pilot is owned by Jim Haslam, a former UT football player and a man who has supported the University of Tennessee and UT football with hefty multi-million dollar donations.

According to the police report, the convenience center wasn't the target of the three suspects. Two victims parked outside the store were. But I was still struck by the irony.

If you thought the Western Kentucky game was Lane Kiffin's first test, you're wrong. This is.

Kiffin appears to be no-nonsense in his approach to discipline. Two of the players have already had issues with the head coach, and I fully expect this to be the last confrontation. The tag on Kiffin through the first nine games this season, is that he is running a clean program and has had no arrests. It's an image he's perpetuated and seems to bask in.

If Kiffin doesn't act fast and firm on this, he'll be considered a fraud. Trust me.

armed robbery suspects of ut football team

i think the players that are involved in the armed robbery need to have an ole fashioned butt whipping and then sent on down road !! i think it is an emabarrassment to their families,to the knoxville community, and especially to the university. if i was lane kiffin i would send them packing and not think twice about it !! i am sure they are other players would love to take their place and work hard that deserve to be there and fill their positions toward their bright futures as professionals!! go lane and monty kiffin and go big orange!!!

UT Players Armed Robbery

The players should be expelled from the football team and school. Send them to jail. Tennessee does not need people like that.

I think that he did the right

I think that he did the right thing by kicking them off the team. He should give all three of the boys the same way. Now that there is another one that has been put in jail for robbery he should be kicked off the team to.

i think just because they are UT football players they sould not get special privlages they should be completly removed from the school and forgotten from football at UT also they shouldnt be able to leave the state on bond (is that legal) they are thugs they probably think they can get away with what they did because they are VOL players HAVE NO MERCY ON THESE TERRORIST!!!!!!!!!

Its about time

Thank goodness that these players were let go from the team.
Its time to bring some integrity and discipline back to sports in general and this is a great example of how do do it correctly.
Not only should they be let go from the team but they should be removed from school.
As for Kiffin,
I had my doubts about this man, but in my opinion he passed his first serious test with flying colors.
Good call Coach!!!!!

he didn't pass any test.

he didn't pass any test. National media was on him to make a decision and so so quickly. He didn't kick all three off the team. He kept his prize recruit, Jackson. The only one that has been consistently playing. He did nothing but take the heat off him and kept the player that will make a difference for his program.

I think baby kiffin took some heat off of him by kicking the least talented players off the team. What about Jackson??? Richardson has promise, but besides one 45 yard run, hasn't done anything. Didn't Jackson just make a speech on Wednesday about doing the right thing. Wasn't he just suspended for positive drug test? He was in the car with them, and by the way, some pot was found in the car. Wonder what his drug test would show now? You can say this was a stupid mistake. This was a felony!! Doing something stupid is not going to class and driving around campus drunk. I think Kiffin will suspend Jackson for a game or two, and that will be it and he get's to keep his 5 star recruit and the next Eric Berry. He killed two lambs and nothing else. To use baby Kiffin's words, "we are building a Championship Program'. Good smoke screen baby Kiffin

Jackson should be disciplined also

Coach Kiffin made the right move but I think Jackson needs to be either be kicked off the team or suspended for the remainder of the season. He was in a car where marijuana was present. Players need to realize what a honor and privlege it is to be playing for a great school like the University of Tennessee and having their education paid through scholarship. They should choose their friends and associates with more care.

My question is why isn't there a curfew for the players during the season? If there is why didn't someone know they were breaking it?

We Tennessee fans take our sports seriously and hold players to a high standard because they wear the orange. Go Vols!

Jackson needs to be kicked

Jackson needs to be kicked off the team to he is no better than the other two? There are other players that can do the same thing he was ? And you never know they might do it better!!!
