Kiffin KO's Brandon Warren
Monday's quick jettison of Brandon Warren from the UT football team makes it clear who's in charge. That would be the head coach. Not the players. And frankly, that wasn't always the case with UT football in the past.
Lane Kiffin doesn't mess around.
Warren's dismissal might have been predicted. Despite his obvious talent, Warren had appeared to be in-and-out of Kiffin's doghouse since August practice started. The coach dropped hints of him not doing "all the right things." Kiffin's comments were left for interpretation.
Monday's sacking of a productive player was not.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing Warren and assistant coach Frank Wilson in a heated encounter on the sideline. A good friend, John Brice, who writes for Volquest.com, told me he saw a similar emotional outburst from Warren during the Florida game.
The fact that Kiffin booted a front-line player in the middle of the season is new around here. As a photographer friend of mine noted on Monday, the previous head coach doled out suspensions by the quarter, or half.
Not Kiffin.
The rest of the players likely got the message. There's no star system, especially for a team that's 2-3.

Some kids practice well and
Some kids practice well and play bad, others practice bad but play well. I think we see that in Warren. Some coaches make great assitants and bad head coaches. Coaching is more than winning, its running the ship and the people in it. Wogan says Kiffin doesn't mess around. No he dismisses five star football players with five star personalities. The worst quarterback, the worst record and the worst coach. You can't blame all this on Phillip Fulmer. UT made a huge mistake and Kiffin is going to prove it to you. Tennessee is unraveling and so will recruiting. Mutiny, and its not on the Bounty.
kids practice
It's a week later and I don't see the mutiny, anywhere. As a matter of fact, I see recruiting headed in a better direction than with the previous administration. You sound emotional and if you've been there and done that you would recognize that when a player becomes emotional to the point of affecting their mentality, any control or edge is lost. Personally, I think we should be 6-0. I hand the first loss to UCLA to the coaches. Playing Jones when he was not ready and not getting Marsalis involved in this game were huge mistakes. You take away a favorite receiver and you affect the QB's confidence...natural at any level. Jones later admitted in a KNS article that Teague ran a much crisper route than he and he needed to work on being in the place that was expected. I give the Florida loss to not paying attention to details and discipline...Jones not being aware of where he was in the end zone was worth 7 points and Rico trying to run through his own player and not taking the angle would have stopped the drive and saved another 7. That's 14 points...we lost by ten. The last loss I give to JC and the receivers. Throwing behind on quick slants is ridiculous, but not unexpected. You can't knock down the pass thrown to Zach Rogers and the defense was in the right place at the right time...7 points. Can you imagine being on the field and getting beaned in the head because you were not looking for the ball. If you are a receiver and on the field, you have to be expecting the ball. It's much like baseball, where every player in the field has to be expecting that the ball will be coming to them every play. Fulmer was getting soft, wanting to be everyones dad, give them 4 and 5 chances...he lost his edge. Kiffin doesn't want to be their dad, and rightfully so. First year athletes should be given some amount of leash, but the old addage of fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me sure seems to be dead on here. Warren was not new to the biz and probably knew he had a shorter leash, not just on football, but also about class attendance and academics. He appears to be an athletic specimen that could warrant another chance, but there's a history to that. If you are going to play any sport at a D1 school in the SEC, you have to understand coming in that you have the opportunity of a lifetime and that you have greater responsibilities than regular students, because your actions will be magnified greater than normal and the university benefits or takes a hit based on how you conduct yourself. I don't think a lot of the kids coming in understand that, given that they have usually been coddled and not necessarily been held accountable for their actions previously.
kiffen/warren
I know Kiffen is trying to let his players know who is head coach, but being arrogant is not a good way. We have lost too many players, for reasons unknown. What is wrong in mentoring a young man, counseling him, not giving him the boot; this is not the NFL (tho' Kiffen didn't do too great there), UT takes these young men under their wing to help them grow and mature in a setting that is sometimes foreign to them. Coaches, have patience, don't fly off the handle and make a decision that could harm a young man and something you may regret later! It's not all football, it's taking the responsibiity of teaching young men to grow into responsible adults. Give them a chance to do this!!!

I'm sure these decisions are not made in a vacuum. I'm also sure that NFL experience from the coaching staff does play a part in the decisions made. Having been at the collegiate and professional level and knowing the path it takes to get from point A to point B, it would appear that there are some issues that have not been made known. I would bet dollars to doughnuts that academics had something to do with this, also. Would you want to have your team used to relying on someone only to have them missing from pivotal games because they didn't keep the other aspects of their lives in order. It's better to take care of business early. Brandon has a chance to play again if he gets his house in order.

Kiffin
Establishing discipline in the Tennessee football program is long overdue.
If the players recruited for college football are not mature enough to accept discipline, then they aren't mature enough to play college football.
No team is very successful with a roster of individuals. The records held
in college football have been by coaches who have rules and insist that
they are followed. I give you one, Coach Paul Bryant.
The "Old Ball Coach" Steve S.
The "Old Ball Coach" Steve S. another one. Discipline is key.
Discipline
At the time when Jim Wogan's lead on sports and the News-Sentinel's
headlines on the sports page, no longer includes the suspension or
dismissal of a player, is the same time that we will know that Coach Kiffin
has restored discipline on the team and he has full control.
I hope that doesn't take as long as filling all the positions with the talent
that is needed, to be competitive in the SEC.
Brandon Warren?
If any of you have ever had the pleasure to meet Brandon Warren then you have a million questions in your mind. This is one of the finest young men that I have ever had the pleasure to meet. He is very soft spoken, respectful, and also a caring young man. He was raised to be everything any of us would want our kid to be. He's an incredible athlete and very competitive and I'm sure he gets fired up about things, but to just kick him off of the team is very arrogant of Kiffin. He could have suspended him from a gmae or two to get his attention but to take away the kids football future is unexcusable. I for one am done with Mr, Kiffin and UT Vols Football program. Kiffin has made too many questionable comments in the media and now for him to treat such a wonderful young man this way is too much for me. See Ya Mr. Kiffin, I will not call you coach!!!
