Messing With Greatness
Why mess with greatness?
Because Lane Kiffin isn't worried about one guy. He's worried about the entire team
One of the best players in college football has had his role re-defined by the UT coaching staff. Eric Berry is playing linebacker. Well, not officially. On Tuesday, Berry called it something like "a bafety". That's a combination of the words safety (Berry's usual position) and linebacker.
Berry leads the Vols in tackles. Before the season started, he was 15 yards shy of the NCAA record for interception returns. Going into the Georgia game, Berry is no closer to the record than he was when the Vols opened against Western Kentucky.
In fact, Berry has just one interception. It happened against Florida.
Berry's often outrageous interception returns often overshadow his ability to knock the stuffing out of an opposing player. He's one of the hardest hitters I've ever seen wear a Tennessee uniform.
When Kiffin arrived he said he was only worried about two things. Winning games and rebuilding the Tennessee football program.
That philosophy is costing Berry a legitimate shot a being a Heisman trophy finalist.
But if the Vols have any hope of turning the season around, it's necessary.
