Manning's Place in History

Submitted by Jim Wogan on January 25, 2010 - 6:25pm

Four years ago, we were talking about Peyton Mannining's apparent inability at winning The Big Game. Now, the discussion has shifted to Manning's place in NFL history.

Some Manning fans believe another win will cement his status as the greatest quarterback to play the game.

Others have guided their teams to more Super Bowl wins. Terry Bradshaw set the gold standard with four. Joe Montana, Bart Starr, Tom Brady and Troy Aikman have multiple wins.

But none of those guys have Manning's career passing totals. Combine that with another Super Bowl win, and Manning may ascend to an untouchable level.

Someday. Because there will always be debate.

For one, Johnny Unitas-- whose Colts records Manning broke, was a guy who helped usher the NFL into the modern era.

Manning himself would likely disagree with the statement that he may be better than Unitas. Manning knows NFL history and recognizes Johnny U's place in it.

Manning's career isn't over. When it is, we can judge his place in NFL history.

Not until then.  Super Bowl win, or not.
