My meeting with The Boss

I went to meet The Boss on Feburary 7, 1996.
New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner came to Knoxville that night, and I had the opportunity to interview him live on our newscast.
Not an easy task for a near life-long fan of the Boston Red Sox.
I mean, let's face it, this is the guy that spoiled many a moment for me.
Fisk versus Munson. The brawl that ruined Bill Lee's career. The Boston Massacre. The Bucky Dent home run. Aaron Boone's 11th inning bomb in game seven of the ALCS. Just a few of the inglorious moments Red Sox fans have endured at the hands of this man. All that money. All that confidence. All that, well, damn success.
But a funny thing happened that night in Knoxville. George was a pretty cool guy.
Steinbrenner's been described a lot of ways-- pompus, charming, famous, infamous, influential, successful and demanding are just a few.
I'll never be a fan of the Yankees.
But I'll thank Steinbrenner for helping keep their rivalry with the Red Sox the best ever-- anywhere in sports.
