NPH and the World Cup

Submitted by Jim Wogan on June 10, 2010 - 11:54am

How do you explain watching a great game to someone who wasn't there? You do the best you can, and hope your description somehow captures what it was like.

My wife and I just returned from our second trip to El Salvador to visit the children of Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH), an orphanage where nearly 500 children live and grow together- as one family. I won't get into the mission of NPH too much-- you can research it yourself.

Suffice to say, I believe in its cause.

I've attached a few pictures to let you know it's an oasis of love, learning and faith surrounded by real poverty in a country that is trying to survive and grow.

To keep this in the spirit of sports-- you should know the children of NPH-El Salvador will be rooting for a number of teams in this year's World Cup. El Salvador didn't make it-- they were ousted by arch-rival Mexico in a qualifying match.

Honduras is there, and so is Mexico. Many of the children of NPH El Salvador will be rooting for Spain-- and any country that plays Mexico. Sound familiar, Tennessee fans?.

I'll be watching the World Cup too, and I'll be cheering for the USA. But most of all, I will be rooting for the children of NPH-El Salvador. I think of them often.
