Trevor Bayne's Phone Call

The call came at around 9:30 Sunday night.
"Hey, it's Trevor."
I was dazed.
"Didn't you just win the Daytona 500?," I responded.
We both laughed.
I've only met Trevor Bayne a couple of times. I interviewed him live during a promotional event last August, when his fan base was a bit smaller. Since his win at Daytona, he's become a national celebrity.
Bayne spent a few minutes with me on the phone. I thanked him for the call, wished him luck the rest of this season, and got ready to air the interview on our sports segment that night.
His Daytona win is still a shocker-- and even though we witnessed clues during the week-- nobody could have predicted the end result.
Bayne made history, becoming the youngest driver to win NASCAR's biggest race. He also put the legendary Wood Brothers #21 Ford back in Daytona's victory lane for the first time since David Pearson's memorable win in 1976.
How Bayne won and what it means to the sport-- has been written about, discussed, blogged and broadcast.
It was one of the great surprises that sports often brings us, the phone call included.
