Melvin Gives It a Go
Former UT basketball player Melvin Goins isn't going away.
Less than two weeks after the Vols were bounced in the NCAA tournament, the former point guard was on the football field, trying to make an impression on Derek Dooley.
Asked if he sees Goins as a safety or cornerback, Dooley joked "I see him as a point guard right now."
Goins is listed at 5 feet 11 inches tall in the Vols basketball media guide. He weighs 180 pounds, and while that might sound small for a major college defensive back, Goins' muscular build and massive biceps made him look like a football player in a basketball uniform.
Goins played football in high school.
Whether Goins remains in a Tennessee football uniform is uncertain.
"Melvin wanted to play and he hadn't played in a long time,"' Dooley said after practice. "So I thought it was better to come out now and get a little feel. We're not going to throw him out there in the fire. After spring he can decide if he really wants to invest in it."
