Million Dollar Lady

Pat Summitt's jumbo-sized contract is in-line with what's taking place in college athletics. Are coaches really worth $1 million a season? Maybe, maybe not. But Summitt's value goes beyond wins and losses. Sure, the six national titles and 900 career wins are great athletic accomplishments. But Summitt's stature as a role model-- and not just for women-- is why she's being paid a handsome fee. She graduates players, demands good citizenship, and instills responsibility and accountability from those who work and play for her.

The Bonds Argument

I am a baseball purist. I love the history of the game. I respect the records that have been set.

But like it or not, there is no rational way to keep Barry Bonds out of the record book. Sure, his reputation has been tarnished. Allegations of steroid use have prompted some to call for Bonds' home run totals to be adjusted.

It's a new millennium asterisk argument. If it worked for Maris, why not Bonds?

Judge Fulmer

A respected colleague pointed this out. To him, Phillip Fulmer's new get-tough policy with football players doesn't make sense.

A projected starter gets arrested-- and is suspended by the head coach.

A projected back-up isn't arrested, but is accused of making an inappropriate comment to a female--and he's kicked off the team.

In the military, rank has privilege. Apparently that works for Fulmer too. But this ain't the military. It's far from it.

Wrong Again, Naturally

I never watch the NFL draft. I don't have that kind of time. It's the same reason I don't play golf.

I've always compared the NFL draft to CSPAN. It's ok for a few minutes, but after that.. it's like watching a pot-roast cook.

For a decent read on the draft, and the media's (including my) inability to get things right.. please see the following article.
