Vols Practice & Manny Trade
Submitted by Jim Wogan on August 1, 2008 - 12:50am.The Vols start practice Saturday. Two weeks ago I asked new offensive coordinator Dave Clawson if he expects a learning curve from his players-- at least until mid-August.
Funny thing is, I can't even explain what a learning curve is, but it sounded good for a question.
Clawson told me, "The learning curve is over." Players should be up to speed with what his offense is all about-- and how to implement it on the field. We'll find out this weekend.
Good Intentions, Bad Timing for WNBA
Submitted by Jim Wogan on July 22, 2008 - 9:01pm.With good intentions, I really planned to run WNBA highlights tonight. Even without the brawl.
Four former Lady Vols were in the league's showcase game-- Los Angeles vs. Detroit. It had the makings of a classic-- it was a potential championship preview and it had major interest for our local viewers.
Then the brawl happened. Candance Parker got into a smackdown with Plenette Pierson with just seconds left in the game. Players were ejected. Parker and others likely will be suspended.
Gumpy Sportscaster Feels Like Kid Again
Submitted by Jim Wogan on July 17, 2008 - 6:52pm.I realize every day at work should be special, and in a way they are. I never take my position for granted. But after 25 years in local television, the days that standout as extra-special are rare.
I'm sure even someone as legendary as Pat Summitt, who's been coaching nearly 35 seasons, has her share of ordinary moments. You can't tell me a February game against Mississippi State means as much as a Final Four showdown with Connecticut.
I had one of those extra-special moments recently.
I got to interview Johnny Bench.
Henry is UT's embarassment
Submitted by Jim Wogan on July 11, 2008 - 5:04pm.I'm coming back at you, leaner and meaner. Ok, maybe not so mean, but the entires are going to be shorter. This isn't a newspaper for crying out loud!
The whole Travis Henry thing is setting me off. In case you haven't heard, a TV station in Denver quotes an NFL source as saying the former Vol tested positive for marijuana in May, just before he was cut by the Broncos.
