Melvin Gives It a Go

Submitted by Jim Wogan on March 29, 2011 - 9:08pm

Former UT basketball player Melvin Goins isn't going away.

Less than two weeks after the Vols were bounced in the NCAA tournament, the former point guard was on the football field, trying to make an impression on Derek Dooley.

Asked if he sees Goins as a safety or cornerback, Dooley joked "I see him as a point guard right now."

Cuonzo Martin Arrives

Submitted by Jim Wogan on March 27, 2011 - 11:09pm

Cuonzo Martin arrived in Knoxville on Sunday night.  Our news photographer Brian Overholt was sent to the airport in an effort to see it happen.

Shortly before 11 p.m., Martin and his family stepped off a private jet, and into a complicated future as Tennessee's new head coach.

Overholt was there to document it.

The Next Coach

Submitted by Jim Wogan on March 26, 2011 - 12:42am

The last coach Tennessee hired from Richmond didn't work out so well.

But don't hold that against Chris Mooney.

Mooney has surfaced as a possible candidate to replace Bruce Pearl as Tennessee's next basketball coach. If the Vols make a move on Mooney, it will be the second time they've tapped Richmond. The last was in 2008, when the Vols hired UR head football coach Dave Clawson as offensive coordinator. We all know how that worked out (and for those who don't: not good, is an understatement).

Too Late to Save Bruce?

Submitted by Jim Wogan on March 20, 2011 - 10:02pm

It has come to this. His name painted on a rock. It's never a good sight around here.

Six years ago, Bruce Pearl was hired to save Tennessee basketball.

He was part coach and part pitch-man, reaching out to students, fans, and anyone else willing to buy into it.

Given the depths Tennessee basketball had fallen to, it wasn't an easy job.

A Chance Meeting with an LA Ram

Submitted by Jim Wogan on March 3, 2011 - 12:00pm

Bill Wade won an NFL title with the Chicago Bears in 1963. But before that, he was a quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams.

Even though the team no longer exists,  I am still a huge Los Angeles Rams fan.

Trevor Bayne's Phone Call

Submitted by Jim Wogan on February 22, 2011 - 2:57am

The call came at around 9:30 Sunday night.

"Hey, it's Trevor."

I was dazed.

"Didn't you just win the Daytona 500?," I responded.

We both laughed.

My friend the pastor-- a baseball fan

Submitted by Jim Wogan on February 13, 2011 - 2:42am

My friend Chrisitan Mathis is a baseball fan.

He is also a Catholic priest, which might explain, at least in part, his allegience to the Chicago Cubs-- a team that obviously needs all the help it can get.

Fr. Christian is insightful and cares deeply about a wide range of issues outside of baseball-- but because this is a sports blog, I thought I would share the most recent entry from his blog-- which happens to be an award winner.

Staying Young with Jody Wright

Submitted by Jim Wogan on February 9, 2011 - 12:09pm

One of the great pleasures of covering sports is hitting the local scene, especially high school athletes. Over the years I have been able to develop great relationships with area players and coaches-- among them is Fulton High School's Jody Wright.

High School Basketball Poll- Feb 7

Submitted by Jim Wogan on February 7, 2011 - 11:29am

In the interest of full disclosure and knowing that some criticism or acclaim may come with this, I will make an attempt to post my weekly votes in the AP high school basketball poll. I am new to the process and was asked to be a voting member well into the 2010-2011 season, so admittedly my intitial vote (week of Jan. 31) was based in part on what the poll already reflected. That said, I did a fair amount of quick research and voted the way I saw things-- using the week's previous poll  (Jan. 24)  as a baseline.
