Random Thoughts Upon Return
Submitted by Jim Wogan on June 11, 2007 - 4:05pm.
I spent a week away from television and newspapers. I managed to survive. That, should scare everyone who works in this business. Some thoughts on things that happened while I was away:
Tennessee Fires Baseball Coach: I like Rod Delmonico. Always have. After eighteen years and three College World Series appearances, then end came last week. I knew something was brewing two weeks ago when I spoke with UT Athletics Director Mike Hamilton. He was in Florida for the annual SEC spring meetings. When he returned, Hamilton said, he would sit down with Delmonico and discuss where "things are at". Hamilton said he does this with all coaches after their seasons are over. But this time, the message carried an ominious tone. Hamilton wouldn't elaborate. I reported his comments that night at 11pm. A few days later, Delmonico was gone. A few days after that, three of his players were taken in the FIRST ROUND of the major league draft. With that kind of talent, more was expected.
Kurt Busch Is A Bully: I spoke with him live (via satellite) a few weeks ago. I came away convinced he had changed his ways. What a dope I am. Last week he was punished by NASCAR for dangerous driving along pit road.
Bill France Jr. Dies: The best statement delivered to the media immediatly after his death came from Lowe's Motor Speedway President Humpy Wheeler.
Lady Vols In CWS: Their third-straight trip wasn't without surprise. Their loss to Arizona in the three-game championship series was. All season long, they proved they were not a one-person team. Uh, that person is Monica Abbott-- national player of the year. But when it REALLY came time to prove it, they couldn't. By the way, their co-head coach Ralph Weekly, is an interesting guy. In addtion to his softball coaching accomplishments, he's got a decorated background in military/law enforcement. His bio is worth a read.
The Red Sox: I left town when they started a 3-game series with the Yankees. I returned to find them still in 1st place, with the pinstripes trailing by 9 1/2 games. I suspect the summer could get interesting.
NCAA Deletes Blogger: I received an interesting update from a colleague that shows the NCAA is cracking down on blogging from game-sites. Someone please Alt/Control/Delete the NCAA.
How long before the Vols kickoff in California?
