Vols Win In Athens

It's happened again. In recent years, you can count on Phillip Fulmer teams to win a signature road game each season.

Gainesville in 2001. Miami in 2003. Athens in 2004. Baton Rouge in 2005. All memorable for their own reasons. In 2006, it's Athens again!

On the Tuesday, Phillip Fulmer described this as a "legacy game".

After the game, Offensive Coordinator David Cutcliffe said the Vols may have finally come together as a team.

If 2006 turns into a special season, the Vols can point to their 51-33 win over Georgia as THE game that helped define who they are.

It was a crazy night. The Vols looked beaten in the beginning, but came-up big in the end. A late 1st half touchdown closed a 17-point Bulldog lead to just ten. A 2nd half defensive surge didn't just stop Georgia-- it turned the tide of the game, and perhaps the season.

The Vols scored 51 points on the nation's best defense. They did it without making big, eye-opening plays on offense. No pass went for more than 18 yards. No run went for more than thirty. The Vols gave up two Georgia returns for touchdowns. But they also scored their first punt-block touchdown in more than a decade.

After the game, Cutcliffe added, "there is still plenty of football to be played". If the Vols continue what they started Saturday night, more football could include a trip to a BCS bowl game.
