Tampa Latest.. Saturday

A Saturday surprise from the Vols. Bret Smith isn't going to play against Penn State afterall. Funny how that works.

On Tuesday, Smith was a no-show at Vols practice. Officially, UT said he had travel difficulties in his home state of Arkansas. Smith was at UT's Wednesday practice and Head Coach Phillip Fulmer indicated he was clear to play.

But on Saturday, after their final full practice, UT issued a release saying Smith was not academically eligibile. Smith has left Tampa.

He's the Vols third-leading receiver and makes big plays. Early in the week, Fulmer was concerned that the Vols other slot receiver, Austin Rogers, was unavailable due to an injury. Sophomores Josh Brisco and Lucas Taylor should see more playing time.

Don't be surprised to see a few more passes to Tennessee's tight ends on Monday-- just a guess.

After practice, the Vols were guests of honor at Clearwater Beach, about a forty minute drive from downtown Tampa. An estimated 10,000 fans were expected to be there for the Outback Bowl beach party.

I've still got sand between my toes.
