Peyton Manning Legacy
Submitted by Jim Wogan on January 18, 2007 - 4:10am.
Indianapolis Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy was asked today if Peyton Manning's status as an elite NFL quarterback will be affected by the outcome of Sunday's game with New England. Will a win, and a Super Bowl bid, make-or-break Manning's legacy?
Dungy said, "Everybody in our locker room wants to do that-- coaches; Peyton is no different. I don't think it's a make or break for any one person. I don't think it's a make or break for him. Would we love to get there and play well, absolutely."
The only problem with Dungy's assessment, he's wrong.
Dungy, more than anyone, can appreciate the pressure Manning is under. Dungy, second only to Manning, has been a target of the Sports Legacy Credibility Police.
They say, a career and all about it, adds up to nothing, unless you win the NFL's biggest game. That's extreme.
But the fact is, Manning is at his professional crossroads. And I think he enjoys it.
A friend of mine summed it up best. If Manning beats New England, it erases all those nay-sayers who who point to things like the Tony George interception against Florida 11 years ago in Gainesville.
Winning Super Bowls does define careers. Ask Marino, who never did it. Ask Elway, who did. Ask Namath, who's short career is defined, to this day, by one Super Bowl win.
Oh yeah, and ask that guy named Brady.
Most of us in Knoxville know and appreciate Manning and his accomplishments. Not winning won't make him any less a person. But the rest of the cold, cruel sports world doesn't have that view.
Manning doesn't need to win a Super Bowl, yet. But he does need to win this weekend.

I think Manning's legacy was
THEY DID IT!!!!!!!!
THEY DID IT!!!!!!!!
It was a team effort and it was fantastic to watch.
I teared up a little,
I don't believe this was the one and only Superbowl Peyton will go to, he's gotten what everyone seems to call it "The Monkey Off His Back." So the only pressure he'll feel in the future is the pressure he puts on himself. So he might as well go and do it again next season.
PEYTON DID IT, DUNGY DID IT,
PEYTON DID IT, DUNGY DID IT, THE WHOLE COLTS TEAM DID!!!!
There going to the show.
There going to the show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hello, Peyton was robbed of
Hello, Peyton was robbed of the Heisman trophy beacuse of his race. To many of us, the Heisman trophy lost it's credibility when thay gave it to a black from Michigan that hasn't did much as compared to Mr Manning. Leave him alone. It's his superior intelligence that has made him such a great athlete.
GO COLT'S
GO COLT'S
Sure they have, Mario,
Sure they have, Mario, Boomer, Shannon Sharpe, Dieon Sanders, Chris Collinsworth, etc. They've all been harping on him in recent weeks, one touchdown and 5 picks isn't great, but because Peyton is who Peyton is he can't be aloud to have a bad game.
I know Tom Brady has a couple TD's this postseason, but I heard on the NFLN update that, "Peyton Manning and the colts managed to slip by the Ravens with five field goals (Peyton had two picks)."
I thought last year was it.
I thought last year was it. The colts are fortunate to host this game as a #3 seed, so in my opinion this is it. I am tired of hearing about him not being able to win when it counts. But you have to like the way the D is playing right now. I don't think Peyton will throw up 3 stinkers in a row for the playoffs. This will be the game of the year folks. Now that the Titans are out of the picture, East Tennessee has a new team in the playoffs. GO COLTS!!
Blasting?! Actually,
Blasting?! Actually, lately, I've heard NO ONE blast Peyton for ANYTHING. When his career is finished, he'll be the NFL's most prolific and productive quarterback. But even he admits, (like Elway) this Super Bowl thing drives him. In nine years of playing, this is his best chance to get there. Who knows, it could be his last. That-- sounds like a crossroads-- to me. Elway won twice, in his 15th and 16th seasons. But Marino never made it back after playing in one early in his career. Peyton has talked about "windows of opportunity" and how these "windows" close.
Not playing in a Super Bowl won't diminish Peyton's accomplishments. He knows it. I know it. You know it. But winning one changes everything. As a Manning fan, even I see that.
I do apologize for this I
I do apologize for this I have one typo that stands out.
I didlike your use of the word crossroads, it makes it sound like if they the Colts, Peyton what have you lose this Sunday Peyton should just go ahead and announce his retirement? Anyway,Elway didn"„¢t win one until his 13th or 14th sason I think.
Its should be DISLIKE.
So if the Colts win, it will
So if the Colts win, it will erase all those naysayers? Or is it just if Peyton wins all is erased? For the cruel sports world you mentioned its the second question thats really being asked, right? (53 to a team ya know?)
I don't remember what Peyton Manning said exactly but it was something like, " You either need to give him all the credit for winning if your going to blame him for the team losing."
If the colts win and I hope they do, those naysayers might be shut up for a moment, but then it will start again can Peyton/Dungy/Colts when the big game. If they manage to hoist the trophey over there head this year a new question will arise and be asked before the start of the next season, "Yeah but can they win two?"
Peyton holds so many records and is going to continue to break more records that there is no way anyone would let him have the respect he deserves and has earned with only one Superbowl ring.
I didlike your use of the word crossroads, it makes it sound like if they the Colts, Peyton what have you lose this Sunday Peyton should just go ahead and announce his retirement? Anyway,Elway didn't win one until his 13th or 14th sason I think.
Jim Wogan if you are one of those Knoxville citizens that know and appreciates Manning, why are you blasting him like this? I know its not because your part of the "Cruel Sports World" you would actually have to come up with something new, instead of vomiting up what you hear off of the major sports networks.
Win or lose Sunday I will still be a Colts/Peyton/Dungy fan, until Peyton retires from the game, and in the Sports World win or lose he'll still be blasted for something.
Last night on Glenn Beck
Last night on Glenn Beck (CNN Headline News Channel) his guest, Jerry Rice, stated that he picks Colts -vs- Saints in the Super Bowl. Glenn Beck's take on this is that he wants the Colts.
As I respect both of these men...I say "GO COLTS -- GO PEYTON !!!"
Manning was robbed of the
Manning was robbed of the Heisman because a vast majority of the voters bought into the Woodson late-season hype. Race had NOTHING to do with it. Michigan going undefeated and being ranked #1 did. Woodson won it on one play-- a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown against Ohio State.
Wow Mike. Well, that will
Wow Mike. Well, that will just about do it for this thread.
